‘Loyal’ Was A Big Hit In Jail Too

If you’re in jail, you’re probably not having the best time of your life, but during Chris Brown’s stint behind bars, he had a couple of encouraging moments. In addition to learning that “Loyal” had hit #1 on the charts while he was incarcerated, Breezy reveals that the guards actually played the song inside the correctional facility.

["They were] playing it over the speakers when I was locked up,” Breezy explained to MTV News. “You know how they’d call you like, ‘Brown you’ve got a visitor’ — they would play the music and I [thought]…this is funny.”

What a co-sign. And obviously “Loyal” was even bigger outside of those walls.

Why Is Frank Ocean’s Dad Suing Russell Simmons?
The $142 million lawsuit concerns 'deadbeat dad' accusations.
by britt julious
In a bit of surreal (and ironic) news, Frank Ocean‘s absentee father has decided to make an appearance – in court.
Calvin Cooksey has just hit hip hop and fashion impresario Russell Simmons with an $142 million lawsuit for allegedly referring to Cooksey as a deadbeat dad on Simmons’ pop culture website, Global Grind. A quick search on the site, however, does not specifically name Cooksey.
According to TMZ, Cooksey – who hasn’t been in his Ocean’s life since he was five – also accused Ocean’s mother, Katonya Breaux Riley, of keeping a young Ocean away from him throughout his childhood.
Frank and his mother have always maintained a close relationship. When Frank opened up about his sexuality on a post on Tumblr, his mother referred to him as “the most incredible human I know. Honest true and loving,” on her twitter.
Cooksey believes the allegedly disparaging remarks have damaged his career (he describes himself as a singer, writer and inventor) and is suing for loss of future income.

Today marks two decades since Bad Boy Records released Ready to Die. It was the debut album of American rapper The Notorious B.I.G., released September 13, 1994 on Bad Boy Records. The label's first release, it features production by Bad Boy founder Sean "Puffy" Combs, Easy Mo Bee, Chucky Thompson, DJ Premier, and Lord Finesse, among others. Recording for the album took place during 1993 to 1994 at The Hit Factory and D&D Studios in New York City. The partly autobiographical album tells the story of B.I.G.'s experiences as a young criminal. Ready to Die is his only studio album released during his lifetime; as he was murdered days prior to the release of his second album Life After Death (1997). ... See MoreSee Less

Diplo & Friends Plan to Expand EDM Empire and Capitalize on $6.2B Business
Now that the electronic dance music scene has blown up into an astounding $6.2 billion business, Diplo’s attorney David Rappaport, whose clients also include Mad Decent, Phantogram, Cold War Kids and Dirty Projectors, has joined law firm Manatt, Phelps & Phillips as a partner in the New York office in order to help build the firm’s new artist and electronic dance music roster. Not only will Rappaport be partnering with the firm, but he will also oversee the Manatt’s music transactional practice. Manatt currently represents artists like Death Cab for Cutie, Banks and Belle Brigade, making this expansion a considerably profitable move for the law firm.
The once underground, counterculture of electronic dance music has now surfaced into the mainstream business arena and has proven to be quite the cash cow for lawyers and other businessmen like Rappaport to capitalize on, with Diplo currently on the cover of Billboard magazine and Mad Decent label and block party raking in $12 million this past year.

Soulful Sunday Bio
Amel Larrieux

Amel's mother, Brenda Dixon Gottschild, was a dance critic and professor. Larrieux was raised in a very artistic environment and was surrounded by talented and inspirational artists. Many of her influences are drawn from R&B, soul, jazz, hip-hop, and gospel with flashes of Middle Eastern, West African, and Indian ethnic styles. In 1991, through a mutual friend, Larrieux met producer-songwriter Bryce Wilson (best known for the 1980s hip-hop act Mantronix) and they formed the duo Groove Theory.
